A Prehistoric Village Discovered Thanks to a Drop in the Lake’s Water Level
The museum’s story began in 1929 during the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in nearby Riva del Garda. When the water level of Lake Ledro was lowered for construction work, thousands of wooden stakes emerged from the mud. Archaeologists soon determined that these were the remains of a large Bronze Age settlement dating from approximately 2200 to 1350 BCE. To this day, it remains one of the best-preserved prehistoric settlement sites in the entire Alpine region.
What was life like four thousand years ago?
The museum’s biggest attraction is the faithfully reconstructed replicas of prehistoric houses on stilts. You can step inside them, examine their furnishings, and get a sense of what daily life was like for the people who lived there.
Inside the museum, original archaeological finds discovered at the bottom of the lake are on display. Because they were hidden for thousands of years in clay-rich mud without exposure to air, not only ceramic vessels and bronze tools but also objects made of organic materials have been preserved. For example, you’ll see parts of fishing nets, fabrics, ropes, wooden tools, and a hollowed-out canoe more than 3,600 years old. Finds this well-preserved are quite rare in Europe.
A Museum That Even Kids Will Enjoy
Unlike traditional archaeological museums, a visit here isn’t just about looking at display cases. The grounds feature outdoor reconstructions of a prehistoric village, and during the season, demonstrations of ancient crafts and programs for families with children are often held here. Children can try their hand at making fire, crafting tools, or weaving fabric.
In addition, the entire exhibition was completely modernized in 2019. New interactive elements, multimedia, and a more open layout make the tour more enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
Why is the site listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List?
The pile dwellings at Lake Ledro are part of the collective inscription “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps,” which includes 111 archaeological sites in six European countries. They were inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2011 as an exceptionally valuable testimony to life in prehistoric times. Ledro is among the most significant and best-studied sites in this group.

The museum is located in the village of Molina di Ledro, right on the shore of the lake. Allow about one to two hours for the tour. If you’re spending your vacation at Lago di Ledro or nearby Lake Garda, this is an outing you can easily combine with swimming, biking, or a walk around the lake.
