If you want to experience Florence from a different angle and avoid the masses of tourists, the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte is the perfect place for you. This ancient monastery, located on a hill above the city, offers not only peace and spiritual atmosphere, but also one of the most beautiful and least known views in Florence.

History of the monastery

The Monastery of San Miniato al Monte is one of the oldest and most important religious sites in Tuscany. Its history dates back to the 8th century, when it was built on the site where, according to legend, Saint Minias, the patron saint of Florence, was executed. Saint Minias was a Christian missionary who, according to legend, came to Florence from eastern Rome and was martyred for his faith. The site of his martyrdom was considered holy, and so this monastery was founded on it.

The church, which is part of the monastery complex, was built in the Romanesque style and today is one of the best examples of this architectural style in the area. Its interior is also unique, decorated with magnificent mosaics, frescoes and rare works of art, as well as a unique marble floor.

breathtaking views of Florence

The biggest attraction of this monastery is its location on the hill of Monte alle Croci, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire city. Unlike other viewpoints such as Piazzale Michelangelo, this place is less touristy, making it an ideal destination for those looking for tranquillity and an authentic experience. Here you have the opportunity to see Florence in its full glory: you will have a view of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Ponte Vecchio and the whole surrounding area, including the Tuscan hills in the background.

What will you see inside the monastery?

In addition to the views, the monastery also offers many artistic gems. The church is richly decorated with frescoes and mosaics, the most notable being the mosaic on the main apse, which depicts Christ and the angels. The interior is quiet and has a very spiritual feel.

Also note the marble floor, which is a masterpiece of Florentine artists. The monastery also contains a crypt where the relics of Saint Minias are kept, and several medieval fresco cycles that tell the story of his life and martyrdom.
