In the heart of Vicenza, Italy, lies a theatrical gem that will transport you to a world of antiquity and Renaissance perfection. Teatro Olimpico, the world's first indoor theatre, enchants visitors with its optical illusion, history and unique atmosphere. It is the oldest indoor stone theatre in Europe and one of the best preserved examples of illusionistic scenography and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The legacy of the genius of Andrea Palladio
The Teatro Olimpico was designed by the famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio in 1580, shortly before his death. The building was completed by his pupil Vincenzo Scamozzi, who designed a fascinating set with optical illusions. From the outside, the building looks inconspicuous, but its interior will amaze any lover of art and history!
Palladio took inspiration from ancient Roman theatres, but brought their concept into the Renaissance era - the interior features Roman columns, niches, statues of gods and heroes, all made of stone, wood and stucco.
The illusion of an endless street: a scene that deceives the eye and the mind
The theatre's greatest jewel is its permanent stage, which depicts a view of the ancient city. Scamozzi used an ingenious perspective illusion that makes the stage set appear as deep streets, even though it is actually only a few metres long. The effect is so convincing that it looks like the set of a modern film production - yet it was made in the 16th century!
More than just a historical monument
The Teatro Olimpico is not just a museum - it still hosts theatre performances, concerts and cultural events. The atmosphere of the hall, with its soft lighting, historic benches and original decoration, is unforgettable. The capacity of the theatre is modest, so you can expect an intimate and authentic experience.
