This historic theatre was built between 1617 and 1618 for Duke Ranuccio Farnese, as part of a wider plan to enrich the cultural and political life of the city. Its construction was financed by the Farnese family, an important family that had a great influence on the city and regional development at this time. It is located inside the Palazzo della Pilotta.
The Teatro Farnese is considered one of the first theatres in the world to be designed as a fixed stage theatre, which means that it had a permanent stage, whereas before there were conventional stages that could be easily changed. Its layout is also quite unique. The theatre has a large wooden auditorium with a capacity of up to 3,500 spectators, making it one of the largest Renaissance theatres in Italy. The architectural style is strongly inspired by the ancient Romans and was designed in accordance with the theatrical technology requirements of the time, which included mechanical devices for changing scenes.

The biggest gem of this theatre is, of course, its magnificent set. Airy, dramatic and spectacular. The walls of the stage are decorated with statues and paintings that are reminiscent of ancient gods and heroes. The dominant element is a large painted backdrop (the prospectus), which gives the audience the impression that they are looking at an open world full of colour and stories.
In 1734, after several interventions and renovations, the theatre was completely destroyed by fire. Fortunately, after a long period of oblivion, the theatre was restored and opened to the public in the 20th century. Today, the Teatro Farnese is used not only for theatrical performances but also for various cultural events and exhibitions.

Teatro Farnese can be found in Palazzo della Pilotta, a large palace complex in the city centre. Today, Palazzo della Pilotta serves as a cultural centre and, in addition to Teatro Farnese, you will also find the Galleria Nazionale di Parma, the Archaeological Museum and the Biblioteca Palatina. If you are planning a visit to Parma, this palace is definitely worth a tour as it is one of the most important historical sites of the city.
