Stilo is a small historic town nestled in the hills of Calabria, just a few kilometers from the Ionian Sea. Although it lies off the beaten path, it’s one of the places worth visiting during a vacation on the Calabrian coast. The biggest attraction is the famous Byzantine church of La Cattolica, but it’s certainly not the only reason to visit Stilo.

The town lies on the slopes of Monte Consolino, and its historic center consists of narrow stone-paved streets, old houses, churches, and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside. A visit to Stilo can thus be a pleasant change of pace from your time at the beach—in just a few hours, you can swap the beach for history, architecture, and the Calabrian mountain landscape.

Stilo lies between the mountains and the Ionian Sea

Stilo stretches across the slopes of Monte Consolino in the region known as Locride. It’s relatively easy to get here from the coast, yet a visit feels like a journey into a completely different world.

Its location is one of the reasons why Stilo is an interesting destination for a day trip. If you’re vacationing in areas such as Monasterace, Soverato, or along the Ionian coast of Calabria, you can combine a visit to this historic town with a day at the beach.

Moreover, Stilo isn’t the kind of place that requires a multi-day itinerary. You can set aside a few hours to explore the historic center and the main sights, and then head back to the coast.

Stilo has a history dating back more than a thousand years

Stilo’s history stretches far back into the past. The region was influenced by the Greek colonization of southern Italy, and later saw the Byzantines, Normans, and other powers come and go, all of which shaped the character of Calabria. The Byzantine period, in particular, left a significant mark here. It is thanks to this period that Stilo is now one of the most interesting historical sites in Calabria.

The historic center is built on a hillside, and when walking around, you should expect fairly steep streets and stairs. The reward, however, is the views of the surrounding hills and the coast.

La Cattolica: The Main Reason to Visit Stilo

The most famous landmark in Stilo is undoubtedly La Cattolica. This small stone church stands above the historic center and is one of the most significant examples of Byzantine architecture in Italy. The church dates back to approximately the 9th to 10th centuries, and its architecture reflects the Byzantine tradition. It is characterized by a compact structure with five domes, set into the slope of Monte Consolino.

La Cattolica is interesting not only for the building itself but also for its surroundings. From the church, there are views of Stilo and the surrounding Calabrian landscape.

Stilo is also the hometown of Tommaso Campanella

Tommaso Campanella, who was born here in 1568, is inextricably linked to Stilo. He was a philosopher, writer, and Dominican monk and is considered one of the leading figures of early modern Italian thought. His best-known work is *The City of the Sun* (*La città del Sole*), a philosophical treatise describing his vision of an ideal society.

What else is there to see in Stilo?

La Cattolica is the main attraction, but it would be a shame to leave immediately after visiting the church. The historic center is small and can be explored on foot. Worth seeing, for example, are the Duomo di Stilo, the city’s main cathedral, and the Chiesa di San Giovanni Theristis, a church that highlights the significance of the Greek-Byzantine and monastic traditions in this part of Calabria.

You can combine your trip with a visit to the Marmarico Waterfall

If you’re already in this part of Calabria, you can also combine your visit to Stilo with a trip into nature. Nearby is the Marmarico Waterfall, which, at a height of approximately 114 meters, is one of the tallest waterfalls in Italy and is considered the highest waterfall in Calabria.

It’s located in a natural setting in the Serre Calabresi area.

And what about the beaches? They’re always within easy reach

One of Stilo’s greatest advantages is its location. After visiting this historic town, you don’t have to travel for hours inland. The Ionian coast is relatively close by.

If you don’t want to spend your entire vacation in Calabria just by the sea, Stilo is exactly the kind of place worth visiting for a day trip. It’s not huge, and you don’t need a whole day to explore it, but it offers enough attractions to turn an ordinary trip into one of the most enjoyable experiences of your vacation.
