The legend of Pizzomunno and Cristalda
Vieste, one of the most charming towns of the Gargano in Puglia. And one of the most touching stories of southern Italy is linked to the stairs of love.
The story goes that Pizzomunno, a handsome fisherman from Vieste, loved a girl named Cristalda. But the sea envied him - the sirens, enchanted by his beauty, wanted his love for themselves. When he refused them, they took Cristalda into the depths. Pizzomunno was left alone, his pain turning his body into the white limestone monolith that still stands on the beach of Spiaggia del Castello. And it is said that once in a hundred years, lovers can meet again... for a while.
Scalinata dell'Amore is dedicated to this legend. On the individual steps you will find the verses of the song "Pizzomunno" by the singer Max Gazzè, which made the story famous again throughout Italy.
Where to find the stairs and what they look like
The stairs are located in the centre of the Borgo Antico historic quarter, close to the cathedral and the views over the sea. White steps with handwritten verses, small drawings of hearts and symbols of love.
It's a perfect stop when walking through the old town. What's more - if you're travelling in a group of two - it's said that whoever makes a silent wish here together will have their wish granted.
Best time to visit
-
Morning: soft light, minimal people
-
Golden hour before sunset: the most romantic charm
-
Evening: quiet, the smell of the kitchen and the lamps on the walls... most beautiful.
