Sperlonga, a town between Rome and Naples, is one of the interesting places of the Lazio region. The name Sperlonga comes from the Latin "spelunca" - cave. Caves played an important role in ancient history. The most famous is the Grotta di Tiberio - the cave where the Emperor Tiberius had a luxurious villa built with fish ponds and a dining hall right in the rocks above the sea. In the cave, beautiful sculptural groups depicting scenes from Odysseus' wanderings have been found and can now be admired in the local museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Sperlonga).
After the construction of the road in 1957 and the discovery of the cave with the statues, Sperlonga became a popular tourist destination.
White streets and Mediterranean charm
A walk through the historic centre of Sperlonga is like a journey into a fairy tale. Steep staircases, passages under arches, white walls of houses decorated with flowers and views that take your breath away. Every corner exudes an ancient atmosphere, yet the town remains pleasantly quiet even in the peak tourist season.
In Piazza Fontana you can enjoy Italian gelato or fresh seafood in traditional trattorias.
Torre Truglia - guardian of the coast
On the promontory between Levante and Ponente beaches stands Torre Truglia, the iconic watchtower of Sperlonga. Built in 1532 on the foundations of an earlier structure, it served as a defensive point against the pirate raids that threatened the entire Tyrrhenian coast in the Middle Ages and in modern times.
The tower has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Today, it shines with a white façade and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the sea, the beaches and the entire historic centre of Sperlonga. Torre Truglia is not only a symbol of the town, but also a romantic place to stroll, especially at sunset when the sea and the white houses turn golden tones.
Beaches like the Caribbean
One of Sperlonga's biggest attractions is its beaches. Spiaggia di Levante and Spiaggia di Ponente both boast fine golden sand and clear water that shimmers in all shades of turquoise. The coastline is lined with cliffs, small caves and romantic coves, ideal for swimming or kayaking.
Sperlonga's beaches are awarded the Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag), which guarantees high quality water and services.
