Are you planning a holiday in San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic coast? As in many other Italian resorts, there is a residence tax(imposta di soggiorno). This tourist tax is collected by the municipality from all visitors who stay overnight in local accommodation.

What is the sojourn tax

The sojourn tax is a local tourist tax levied by the municipality on guests staying overnight in a hotel, apartment, B&B or other tourist accommodation.

The money collected is used for things such as tourism development, maintenance of beaches and promenades, and improving public services for visitors.

The tax is not included in the price of the accommodation and is usually paid directly to the accommodation provider on arrival or departure.

When the tourist tax is paid

In San Benedetto del Tronto, the residence tax is levied throughout the year (1 January - 31 December) according to the current municipal regulation

This means that the fee applies not only to the main summer season, but also to winter or off-season stays.

Maximum number of nights charged

The fee is not valid for an unlimited period of time. The stay fee is calculated for a maximum of 7 consecutive nights per person. So if you stay 10 or 14 nights, you will only pay tax for the first 7 nights of your stay.

How much does the sojourn tax cost

The amount of the fee depends on the category of accommodation. In San Benedetto del Tronto, the maximum rate is set at approximately €2 per person per night.

Typical rates are for example:

Type of accommodationStay tax (person/night)
Hotel 4★ approx. 2 €
Hotel 3★ approx. 1,50 €
Hotel 1 and 2★ approx. 1 €
Apartments, B&B, tourist accommodation approx. 1 €

For example, some hotels quote 2 € per person per night for a maximum of 7 nights.

Who does not pay the tourist tax

Children under 13, permanent residents, some other groups according to the municipal ordinance are usually exempted from the fee.

How to pay the residence tax

The fee is paid directly to the accommodation provider (hotel, apartment, B&B), usually at check-out or when paying for the stay. The accommodation provider then remits the amount collected to the municipality.
