The spa town of Montecatini Terme is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Tuscany. As in many Italian towns, there is a sojourn tax(imposta di soggiorno) for accommodation. This local tax is collected by the municipality from all visitors who stay overnight in tourist accommodation.

What is the sojourn tax

The sojourn tax is a local tourist tax paid by guests staying in hotels, guesthouses, apartments, B&Bs or other tourist establishments.

The City uses the proceeds of this tax primarily to promote tourism, maintain historic sites and public spaces, and improve visitor services.

The tax is not included in the price of accommodation and is usually paid directly to the accommodation provider at check-out.

When the tourist tax is paid

In Montecatini Terme the residence tax is collected throughout the year (1 January - 31 December).

It is therefore valid both in the main tourist season and for winter or off-season stays.

Maximum number of nights charged

The fee is not charged indefinitely. The stay fee is calculated for a maximum of 7 consecutive nights per person. Therefore, if you stay for two weeks, you will only pay tax for the first 7 nights of your stay.

How much does the stay tax cost in Montecatini Terme

The amount of the tax varies according to the category of accommodation. In Montecatini Terme, the rates are mainly divided according to the number of stars of the hotel.

In other types of accommodation (B&B, apartments, tourist rentals) the tax will cost you about 1,40-1,70 € / person / night. The rate is always charged per person per night, for a maximum of 7 nights stay.

Who does not pay the sojourn tax

According to the municipality's rules, children under 10 years of age, permanent residents of the municipality, some other specific groups according to the municipal ordinance can be exempted from the fee.

How the residence tax is paid

The sojourn tax is usually paid directly to the accommodation provider, usually at check-out or at the time of payment. The accommodation provider then pays the amount collected to the municipality.
