Imagine a journey where mountain paths wind over the shimmering Ligurian Sea, where vineyards, olive groves and the colourful houses of small fishing villages alternate. Welcome to the Sentiero Azzurro - the legendary Blue Trail that connects five villages of the Cinque Terre region on Italy's northwest coast.

This approximately 12-kilometre route is the best way to discover the beauty of the Cinque Terre National Park on foot - and to enjoy its atmosphere at the most leisurely pace: step by step.

Five villages, one heart of Liguria

The Sentiero Azzurro leads you successively through all five iconic villages of the Cinque Terre:

  • Riomaggiore - a romantic harbour village with pastel-coloured houses from where many start their journey

  • Manarola - postcard beautiful, surrounded by vineyards and known for its peaceful atmosphere

  • Corniglia - the only village with breathtaking views, not directly on the sea but on a cliff

  • Vernazza - a pearl among villages with a picturesque harbour and a medieval tower

  • Monterosso al Mare - the largest of the five, with a beach and a seaside resort feel

The path that has a soul

Sentiero Azzurro is not just a hiking trail - it's a story about people, nature and tradition. You walk along paths that have served local winemakers, fishermen and pilgrims for centuries. Cicadas sing overhead, waves crash below you and the smell of rosemary, lemons and sea air wafts around you.

The most famous stretches:

Riomaggiore - Manarola(Via dell'Amore)

The most romantic part, known as the Way of Love. Only 1 km long, with a carved walkway over the sea. Unfortunately, it is often closed due to landslides, but when it is open, it is worth it!

Corniglia - Vernazza

A moderate route winding through vineyards and olive groves. The reward is a view of Vernazza, one of the most photographed in all of Italy.

Vernazza - Monterosso

The longest and steepest part (approx. 3.5 km), but also the most panoramic. The breathtaking views of the sea and villages are worth every step.

Practical tips

  • Cinque Terre Card - To enter some sections (especially Corniglia-Vernazza and Vernazza-Monterosso) you need to buy a ticket. It can also be purchased with the train service between the villages.

  • Suitable footwear - The route follows rocky paths, steps and narrow sections. Trainers or hiking boots are a must!

  • Water and sun protection - In summer the route is exposed to the sun, pack plenty of fluids and headgear.

  • Current trail conditions - Due to landslides and maintenance, some parts of the trail may be temporarily closed. Check the park's official website for current information before heading out.
