History and importance of the place
The Santuario di Montallegro was founded in the 16th century, after an alleged apparition of the Virgin Mary to a local resident, Giovanni Chichizol. Since then, it has become the main Marian pilgrimage site of the Tigullio area and is considered the spiritual protection of Rapallo. The interior of the sanctuary is simple, focusing mainly on the central image of the Madonna of Montallegra, to which local religious traditions are linked.
From a historical point of view, it is not a monumental building, but a place of strong regional significance that still retains its original purpose and atmosphere.
Funivia Rapallo-Montallegro cable car
The most common and popular way to reach the sanctuary is by cable car, which connects the centre of Rapallo with the upper station close to the sanctuary. The ride takes about seven minutes and overcomes a significant elevation gain without the need for a strenuous climb. the ride offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Rapallo and the bays of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino.
The perfect spot for a sunset
The viewpoints around the sanctuary offer a panorama of the Ligurian Sea with the town of Rapallo far below. The evening light here is not disturbed by city traffic or mass tourism and the place retains a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere.
It is the early evening visits that are among the most enjoyable - especially in the summer months when the coast is at its busiest.
Walking and easy hiking opportunities
The area around the sanctuary is the starting point of several marked walking routes leading into the interior of Liguria. These are not technically demanding mountain hikes, but rather quiet forest paths and scenic walks suitable for recreational walkers. The area is ideal for short stops in nature without the need for a day's planning.
