The Santuario della Madonna di San Luca, or Sanctuary of Our Lady of San Luca, is one of the most striking symbols of the city of Bologna and a place of pilgrimage. It is located on top of the Colle della Guardia hill, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding Emilia countryside.

Unique portico: the longest in the world

The path to the sanctuary leads along the longest portico in the world, made up of 666 arches, and which connects the city to the top of the hill. The portico is over 3.5 kilometres long and was built in the 17th to 18th centuries to protect pilgrims and the precious icon of the Madonna during the annual processions. Walking under the arches is an experience in itself - the quiet, gently ascending route offers a spiritual dimension as well as beautiful views.

History and legend of the Madonna icon

According to tradition, the venerated icon of the Madonna and Child originated in Byzantium and was brought to Bologna by a nun from Constantinople in the 12th century. An original chapel was built on the site, which was replaced in the 18th century by the magnificent Baroque basilica as we know it today. Every year there is a solemn procession during which the icon is carried into the city, specifically to St Peter's Cathedral.

The breathtaking view

Upon ascending to the shrine, visitors are rewarded with a panoramic view of the whole of Bologna, the Apennines and the Po Valley beyond. The sanctuary terrace itself is accessible and popular, especially at sunset.
