The Nuragic civilisation and their sacred architecture
The Nuragans were a mysterious people who inhabited Sardinia during the Bronze and Iron Ages. They left behind thousands of stone towers(nurags), villages and cult buildings. Santa Cristina is one of their greatest architectural marvels - thanks to its perfect geometry and technical precision that is still breathtaking today.
The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina
The main feature of the complex is the underground sanctuary with its sacred well. It is reached by 25 stone steps that lead down to the clear water surface.
Its architecture is remarkable. It has a perfect conical shape, straight masonry without mortar, perfect joints of stones.
Another interesting feature is that at the equinox, a ray of sunlight falls directly into the opening of the well and is reflected on the surface of the water. Archaeologists believe that the site was used for rituals associated with the cult of water and the cosmic cycle.
Last but not least, its mystical atmosphere: visitors describe a strong sense of calm and energy, as if time had ceased to exist here.
Other parts of the complex
Santa Cristina is not just a well - the whole complex includes other remains of the Nuragic culture:
-
A stone village with houses where priests or pilgrims lived.
-
A nuraghe (nuragic tower) that served as a guard or ritual place.
-
A circular gathering place - archaeologists believe this was where community meetings and rituals were held.
