Santa Caterina del Sasso is located on the eastern shore of the lake, near the town of Leggiuno in Lombardy.
The legend of the hermit and the miraculous rescue
According to legend, the monastery was founded in the 12th century by a wealthy merchant named Alberto Besozzi from the town of Arolo. After a miraculous rescue from shipwreck, he vowed to dedicate his life to God and became a hermit. His humble chapel gave birth to a larger monastic complex, which was gradually expanded by various religious orders.
Unique architecture and frescoes
The monastery consists of three interconnected buildings built directly into the rock. The special feature is its arcaded loggia overlooking the lake, which has an almost fairy-tale-like effect. Inside, you can admire beautiful frescoes from the 14th-15th centuries depicting religious motifs.

Attractions and access
- Rockslide - The monastery has survived several natural disasters, including a partial rockslide in the 18th century. Today it is secured against further rock falls.
- Access - The monastery can be accessed in three ways: on foot, via a long staircase with 268 steps, by an elevator built in the rock, or by boat, which offers a breathtaking view of the monastery directly from the lake level.
- An atmosphere of tranquillity - Santa Caterina del Sasso is the ideal place to meditate and enjoy the beauty of Lago Maggiore in silence and without crowds.

The monastery is one of the most picturesque places on Lago Maggiore and definitely worth a visit.
