On the west coast of Liguria, just a few kilometres from the border with France, lies Sanremo - a town that has become synonymous with elegance, music and flowering gardens. Called La Città dei Fiori - the City of Flowers - it has attracted travellers, artists and nobility from all over Europe for more than a century.

The history and atmosphere of the city

Sanremo began to develop significantly in the 19th century, when it became a popular winter resort for the European aristocracy. The mild climate, beautiful parks and proximity to the Côte d'Azur attracted Russian imperial families, English lords and Italian artists.

To this day, you'll find villas and hotels reminiscent of the Belle Époque, when Sanremo was one of the most fashionable destinations on the Mediterranean.

Main sights and attractions

La Pigna - Sanremo's old town, a tangled labyrinth of alleys, staircases and small squares that wind uphill like a donut (hence the name "La Pigna").

The Ariston Theatre - the theatre where the famous Festival di Sanremo, Italy's most important music competition, is held every year and has made dozens of singers (such as Andrea Bocelli) famous.

Casino Municipale - an Art Nouveau building dating from 1905, one of the most beautiful casinos in Europe, giving the city a refined atmosphere.

Russian Orthodox Church - built in the early 20th century for the Russian aristocracy who came here for the winter sun.

Beaches and promenade - the town offers a long coastline with sandy and pebbly beaches and the famous Corso Imperatrice, a palm-lined promenade.
