If Pienza is the Renaissance ideal of beauty, then San Quirico d'Orcia is the gentle, unassuming guardian of the Tuscan valley. A town you may know from photos - but you don't even know it. In fact, it's around here that you'll find the legendary groups of cypress trees, the rolling hills and the landscape that has become a symbol of the whole of Tuscany.

San Quirico d'Orcia is tiny, peaceful and real. A place where nothing is exaggerated. Where life is slow. Where you greet your neighbours every morning and have your cappuccino without rushing.

Ancient stones and the smell of olive oil

The town's history dates back to the Etruscans, but the medieval period left its most visible mark. the narrow streets lined with stone houses lead you to the main square, where it stands:

  • Collegiata dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta - a Romanesque-Gothic basilica with three magnificent portals, each different, each masterful.

  • Palazzo Chigi - an elegant city palace (yes, it shares the same name as the Italian Prime Minister's residence - but it originated here in the valley).

  • Walls with gates that remind us that the town once guarded the Via Francigena trade route - the old pilgrimage route to Rome.

You can get around the centre in half an hour, but you probably won't be in a hurry. Walk slowly here.

Horti Leonini - Gardens where time stands still

Outside the walls you'll find the Horti Leonini - 16th-century Renaissance gardens that feel like a secret green world. The perfect place for a quiet stroll, a drink in the shade or a picnic overlooking the soft landscape.

Iconic cypress trees you know from photos

It's around San Quirico d'Orcia that you'll find the most photographed groups of cypress trees in Tuscany, often featured on Instagram, posters, tourist guides and so on. They are:

  • Cipressi di San Quirico - the "circle of cypresses" on the hill

  • Cipressi lungo il viale - a long line of cypress trees on the way to the farm and the photogenic farmhouse

No need for maps - just follow the road to Pienza. The landscape will show you.

Walks that are a joy

San Quirico is an ideal starting point for walking tours in the surrounding area. The landscape is naturally undulating - no brutal hills, just gentle inclines and open views.

One of the best routes is the one from San Quirico d'Orcia to Bagno Vignoni, a 4km walk through olive groves and meadows. And the destination? A spa with a large thermal lake in the middle of a small square. A perfect combination of romance and relaxation.

Tips without words:

  • When to arrive: May, June, September, October - the scenery is at its most beautiful and the town at its most peaceful.

  • Where to sit: Caffè Poliziano (terrace, wine, sunset).

  • What to taste: local extra virgin olive oil - one of the best in Tuscany.

  • Best light: around 18:30-20:00, when the hills burn gold.
