Riomaggiore is the southernmost and the first village of the Cinque Terre that most visitors recognise as the entry point to this fabulous coastline. The village is set in a narrow valley between two hills, and the colourful houses cascade from the harbour to the hillside vineyards. Riomaggiore is vibrant, full of life, yet retains its traditional character.

Riomaggiore consists of several main parts: via Colombo, the main street (a busy thoroughfare of the village with shops, cafes, wine bars and restaurants, ideal for ourbuying souvenirs, wine or tasting focaccia and gelato), the marina (Marina di Riomaggiore - a small, cosysurrounded by colourful houses, one of the most photogenic places in the whole area), the upper the upper part of the town (a quieter area with views, a historic church and picturesque streets away from the main tourist traffic).

Sights and history

In Riomaggiore you will find the Church of St. John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista). It was built in 1340 in the Gothic style. It is located higher up in the town and offers a beautiful view of the valley.

Also here you can visit the Oratory of St. Roch and St. Raphael. It is a small chapel set in the streets of the old town and commemorates historical pilgrimages and traditions.

The Castello di Riomaggiore is also worth a visit. This medieval fortress with a view used to be used for defence against pirates. Today it serves as a cultural site and viewing terrace.

Swimming and the sea

You can jump into the sea directly from the rocks by the harbour, or you can sit on the rocks around the marina. The water here is deep, clear and ideal for snorkelling.

The small pebble beach behind the rock tunnel to the south is again quieter and more accessible for families with children.

Via dell'Amore - The Way of Love

Fancy a hike? The famous Via dell'Amore(Way of Love) starts in Riomaggiore and should lead to Manarola. At the moment, part of the trail is closed due to landslides, but even a short walk along the trailhead is worth it. The path is carved into the rock above the sea and lined with lovers' castles.

Gastronomy and local flavours

Riomaggiore is famous for its lively gastronomic scene. Traditionally, there are fried calamari and anchovies in a cone, which you can take to the port. Of course there's pesto pasta, gnocchi, ravioli - all fresh!

We also recommend trying the wines from the surrounding vineyards - especially the white Cinque Terre DOC and the sweet Sciacchetrà.

Cultural events and village life

The evenings in Riomaggiore are livelier than in other villages - many businesses stay open late.and you'll often hear live music, street performers or engage in spontaneous conversation with the locals.

In May, there is the Festa della Madonna di Montenero - a traditional pilgrimage festival with an ascent to the shrine above the village followed by a festival in the town.

Riomaggiore is easily accessible by train - the station is located directly in the tunnel under the town. Access by car is not recommended, parking is limited and far from the centre.
