Fine white sand and incredibly turquoise water, this is Punta Prosciutto. An area that doesn't seem to belong in the Mediterranean. The Caribbean Salento.

This stretch of coastline lies on the western shore of the Salento, in the Puglia region, roughly between the towns of Porto Cesareo and Torre Lapillo, and is rightly one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy.

A beach like a fairy tale

Punta Prosciutto offers several kilometres of natural beaches, characterised by exceptionally fine sand. The sea here is crystal clear and, thanks to the white sand, literally glows in shades of blue and turquoise. This is why this area is known as the "Caribbean Salento".

The surrounding area is still relatively unspoilt and protected, especially thanks to the presence of the Palude del Conte e Duna Costiera reserve, which protects the dune belt and the typical Mediterranean vegetation.

The ideal place for families and lovers of tranquillity

Punta Prosciutto is a great choice for families with children. The sea here tends to be calm and shallow, and it's a long walk before the water reaches your waist, so swimming is safe even for small children.

If you're looking for peace and privacy, head to one of the open-air stretches, which aren't as crowded as the beach service beaches. However, in the high season (July-August) it can get crowded - especially at weekends, as Punta Prosciutto is very popular.

How to get there?

The best way to get here is by car. The nearest major towns are Porto Cesareo, Lecce (about 40km) or Taranto. Parking is usually available on the roadside or in paid car parks near the beach. However, parking can be difficult in some stretches due to the large number of tourists.

What else to do in the area?

  • Porto Cesareo - a popular resort with plenty of restaurants, fish markets and boat trips.

  • Torre Lapillo - another beautiful beach, very similar to Punta Prosciutto but often a little less crowded.

  • Lecce - the baroque pearl of Puglia, perfect for an afternoon or evening outing.

Practical tips

Bring plenty of water and snacks if you're heading for the more open sections. The sun in southern Italy tends to be very strong in summer - don't forget the sun cream and a hat!in high season, arrive as early in the morning as possible to ensure you have a parking space on the beach.

Punta Prosciutto is one of those places that is easy to fall in love with - whether for its natural beauty, the colour of the sea or for moments of peace away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you are planning a trip to Puglia, be sure to put this "beach pearl" on your list!
