At the foot of the green hills of Monte Grappa is the peaceful town of Possagno, which might easily have disappeared on the map of Italy - if it weren't for the fact that one of the greatest sculptors of neoclassicism, Antonio Canova, was born here.

Today, Possagno is a place of pilgrimage for art lovers, but also a pleasant stopover in the picturesque area between Venice and the Dolomites.

Antonio Canova - master of marble

Born here in 1757, he became famous throughout Europe for his perfect marble sculptures, which can still be admired in the Louvre, the Hermitage and the Vatican. Canova was the sculptor of popes and emperors alike, and his art captured the ideal beauty of the human body with an almost unearthly lightness.

In Possagno you will find the Gypsothek, a unique museum that houses a collection of original plaster models of Canova's works. These served as models for the final marble sculptures. Some were damaged during the Second World War, but thanks to careful restoration, they are once again revealing their charm.

Temple of Canova, Possagno

Temple of Canova - the artist's last work

The Temple of Canova (Tempio Canoviano), a monumental structure inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and the Greek Parthenon, towers directly above the city. Canova himself designed the temple and is buried here. From afar, it resembles an ancient shrine, and when combined with the surrounding landscape, the view will take your breath away! Inside you will find not only Canova's grave, but also several of his works and beautiful sacred architecture.

The charm of the peaceful countryside

Possagno is not just about art - it is also a window into the peaceful life of the Venetian countryside. Beautiful countryside, vineyards, olive groves and quiet streets beckon you to relax. There are many hiking and cycling trails in the area with views of the hills and valleys, ideal for those seeking peace and quiet away from the crowds.

What must you try?

The area is famous for its Prosecco production, so a glass of light sparkling wine is almost a must. We also recommend trying the local cheeses, honey and traditional desserts such as fregolotta (almond cake).
