In the very south of Puglia lies Pescoluse, a small resort that has gained fame for its iconic beach , Spiaggia di Pescoluse, nicknamed the "Maldives of Salento". But that's not all - in addition to endless beaches, it also offers a picturesque centre, interesting sights nearby and an authentic Salento atmosphere.

The beaches of Pescoluse - Maldives Salento

The main attraction is undoubtedly Spiaggia di Pescoluse - several kilometres of fine white sand, turquoise water and dunes covered with Mediterranean vegetation. Not for nothing is this place called the Maldives Salenta. Thanks to its gradual entry into the sea, it is ideal for families with children and therefore there is a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

The beach is well-equipped - you'll find stabilimenti balneari (private beach clubs with sunbeds and umbrellas), as well as open stretches where you can lay out your towel for free.

Sights and attractions in and around Pescoluse

Although Pescoluse is primarily a resort, its historical and cultural surroundings are definitely worth exploring . You can visit the Hypogeum in Salve - an underground space once used as an olive oil pressing plant. They are a typical feature of the Salento region and show how important olive oil production was in the past.

Not forgetting the traditional trulli and pajare - stone houses scattered across the surrounding countryside, which are reminders of the original way of life of the local people. The pajare were used by farmers and shepherds to shelter from the sun and rain, or to store tools or agricultural products.

Things to do in Pescoluse besides the beach

Definitely don't miss the romantic sunsets - the beach faces west, so be prepared for a breathtaking view as the sun sinks into the Ionian Sea. Be sure to sample the local cuisine - fish specialities, homemade orecchiette pasta and Primitivo di Manduria wine are among the unmissable experiences.

Want more? You can rent a boat or join a cruise along the coast to Santa Maria di Leuca.

During the summer there are often local festivals and concerts with traditional Salento music. You can see for yourself the tarantella, a traditional Italian folk dance and musical style that originated in Puglia.according to legend, tarantella originated as a ritual dance against tarantula poison - people believed that after being bitten by a spider, the sufferer must dance until exhaustion to "expel" the poison. The music gradually increased in tempo to make the dance more intense.
