Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi Airport (PEG) is a small regional airport in the heart of Italy. At first glance, it may not seem like the ideal choice for a beach vacation, since Umbria is the only Italian region without a coastline. Still, it can be an interesting alternative if you’re heading to certain parts of Tuscany, the Marche, or the northern coast of the Lazio region.

The airport is known primarily for its compact layout, quick check-in, and relaxed atmosphere. If you’re not a fan of large international airports, Perugia might be a pleasant surprise.

Where is Perugia Airport located?

The airport is located approximately 12 km from the center of Perugia and about 15 km from the historic town of Assisi.

The nearest coastline is the Adriatic coast of the Marche region, which you can reach in about an hour and a half.

Renting a Car at Perugia Airport

If you plan to use Perugia Airport for a trip to the coast, a car is practically a necessity. There are several car rental companies at the airport, and the entire region is primarily geared toward individual travel.

We especially recommend renting a car if you’re heading to resorts in the Marche region, want to explore Umbria during your vacation, plan to combine a beach trip with visits to historic towns, or want to visit multiple destinations during a single trip.

A major advantage is that traffic is lighter than in the Rome or Milan areas.

How do you get from the airport to the coast without a car?

Traveling without a car is possible, but you should expect longer travel times and several transfers.

Bus to Perugia

Bus services run from the airport to the center of Perugia and to the main train station.

From there, you can continue your journey by regional or long-distance trains.

Train to the Adriatic Sea

Rail connections from Perugia go to destinations such as Fano, Pesaro, Ancona, Senigallia, and Civitanova Marche.

In most cases, however, at least one transfer is required.

That is why public transportation is generally more suitable for travelers heading to larger cities rather than to specific seaside resorts.

Buses

Regional bus services operate primarily in Umbria. For trips to the coast, a combination of bus and train is usually more practical.

Direct connections from the airport to seaside destinations are not common.

Taxis and Private Transfers

Taxis are mainly used by travelers heading to Perugia or Assisi. Given the distance, renting a car or booking a private transfer is usually a more sensible option for traveling all the way to the coast.

The closest destination is Fano (1 hour and 30 minutes by car); the trip to San Benedetto del Tronto takes about 2 hours.

Is it worth flying to the coast via Perugia?

If your main goal is simply a beach vacation, there are more suitable airports, such as Ancona or Pescara. However, if you want to explore Umbria, Assisi, and Perugia during a single trip while also spending a few days by the sea in the Marche region, Perugia can be a very interesting alternative.

Perugia San Francesco d’AssisiAirport (PEG) is a small regional airport in the heart of Italy. Although it is not located by the sea, it offers relatively good access to the Adriatic coast of the Marche region. Thanks to car rental options and easy transportation, it’s particularly well-suited for those who want to combine exploring Umbria’s historic cities with a relaxing beach vacation. For a purely beach-focused vacation, however, there are usually more convenient airports closer to the coast.
