Old and new Monterosso
Monterosso is divided into two parts - the historic centre and a newer part called Fegina. They are connected by a short pedestrian tunnel and a coastal path with spectacular views.
The historic centre offers narrow stone streets with typical Ligurian houses in pastel colours, ancient churches, the small Piazza Garibaldi and many family-run restaurants.
Fegina is a more modern area with a wide coastal promenade, hotels, apartments and above all the longest sandy beach of the Cinque Terre.

Sights and attractions
Lovers of historical monuments can visit the Church of Saint John the Baptist (Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista) from the 13th century. gothic style, which boasts characteristic stripes of black and white marble.
The Cappuccini Monastery and the Church of St Francis are also worth mentioning - they stand on a hill above the old town. It offers not only spiritual peace, but also a beautiful view of the sea and the village.
And art lovers will appreciate the statue of Il Gigante. The monumental, 14 m high statue of the god Neptune is carved into the rock on the outskirts of Fegina. It originally held the terrace of a luxury villa, but part of it was destroyed during the bombings of World War II.

Beaches and sea
Monterosso is an ideal place for bathing enthusiasts.fegina beach is the largest and best equipped beach in Cinque Terre, with sunbed and umbrella hire, showers and bars.
If you prefer tranquillity, try the smaller beach near the old town. It's more romantic, with a fisherman's atmosphere, surrounded by cliffs and boats.
The sea here is clear and ideal for snorkelling - you'll often see small fish, crabs and sea urchins.
Gastronomy and local products
Monterosso is a paradise for lovers of Ligurian cuisine. Try the anchovies of Monterosso (with protected designation of origin, served marinated or fried), focaccia and pesto (classic Ligurian dishes, available from thein every bakery) and Sciacchetrà wine (a sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes, ideal with local desserts).

Hiking and excursions
Some of the most famous hiking trails in the area start or end from Monterosso:

Trail to Vernazza (Sentiero Azzurro): one of the most beautiful trails in the Cinque Terre, it takes about 1.5 hours and offers breathtaking views of the sea and vineyards.

Santuario di Soviore: a pilgrimage site above Monterosso, accessible on foot or by car, with views of the whole coast.
Monterosso is easily accessible by train from La Spezia and Genoa. Regional and long-distance trains also stop here. There is also limited parking - if you are arriving by car, expect to park further away from the centre.
