A legend written in stone
According to local legend, the mountain split open at the moment Christ breathed his last on the cross. The earth trembled with grief and the massive rock in Gaeta (in the Lazio region) burst into the depths of the sea. An inscription carved directly into the rock still commemorates this legend and the site is a symbol of faith and wonder for many pilgrims.
In the middle of the jagged mountain stands the Santuario della Santissima Trinità - the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity. It was founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks and for centuries served pilgrims passing through on their way to Rome. Its terrace offers breathtaking views of the blue sea, the coast and the city of Gaeta.
La Mano del Turco - The Hand of the Infidel
Perhaps the most interesting detail of the Montagna Spaccata is the handprint in the rock, known as La Mano del Turco. Legend has it that when a Turkish soldier refused to believe in the story of the cleft rock, he touched the wall and it softened so much that his palm left an everlasting imprint in it. To this day, visitors still try their hand here to see if it fits the stone relief like a glove.

The staircase that winds down through the fissure invites you to walk among the tall, narrow rock walls that tower above you like stone temples. From below, you have a breathtaking view of the sea, whose waves crash against the cliffs. The place has an almost mystical atmosphere, whether you come here as a tourist or a pilgrim.
