Although it is not located by the sea, it is often an attractive alternative for tourists heading to Liguria, the Italian Riviera, or the Cinque Terre region. Compared to Malpensa Airport, its advantage is a shorter journey to the center of Milan and faster access to train connections.
Where is Linate Airport located?
The airport is located approximately 7 km east of downtown Milan. Thanks to its proximity to the city, the transfer from the airport is very quick and easy.
Linate is particularly popular among travelers who want to combine a stay in Milan with a beach vacation or exploring northern Italy.
Distances to popular seaside destinations
Like Malpensa, Linate is not an airport right by the sea, but it serves as a good starting point for a trip to the Ligurian coast. Genoa is about 145 km away, Portofino about 185 km, and Cinque Terre about 220–250 km.
Car rental at Linate Airport
Most major international car rental companies operate at the airport. If you plan to explore multiple locations along the Ligurian Riviera, a car is usually the most convenient option.
A car is especially worthwhile if you want to visit multiple resorts during a single vacation, plan trips off the beaten path, are traveling with family, or have accommodations outside city centers.
The drive from the airport to Genoa takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.
How to get from the airport to the coast without a car?
One of Linate’s biggest advantages is its excellent connection to the center of Milan.
Subway and Train
The M4 metro line runs directly to the airport, connecting the terminal to the city center. From there, you can easily reach the main train station, Milano Centrale, from which trains depart toward the Ligurian Sea.
By train, you can comfortably reach destinations such as Genoa, Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli, Sestri Levante, Levanto, and Cinque Terre. Most Ligurian resorts have a train station right in the center.
Buses
There are regular bus services from the airport to the center of Milan. However, most travelers today use the metro, which is faster and more comfortable. Direct bus connections from the airport to seaside resorts are not common.
Taxis and private transfers
A taxi is ideal for getting to the center of Milan or the train station. Due to the distance, it tends to be quite expensive for a trip all the way to the coast. The trip to Genoa takes about 2 hours, and to Portofino or Finale Ligure, for example, about 2½ hours. For families or larger groups, a private transfer can be an attractive alternative.
Is it worth flying to the coast via Linate?
If you can find a good deal on a ticket, definitely yes. While the transfer to the coast takes about two hours, the journey is relatively straightforward thanks to excellent connections to Milan and the rail network. For some travelers, Linate may even be more practical than Malpensa.
