The Marano Lagoon stretches between the Tagliamento and Isonzo rivers, creating a unique world of lagoons, shallows, reeds and small islands. A typical image of Marano Lagoon are the casoni - simple fishing houses made of wood and reeds. They stand on small islands and look as if time has stood still.
There are dozens of them around Marano Lagoon. Some are still in use by fishermen, others are reminders of a past when life in the lagoon was entirely dependent on water and nature.
Things to do in Marano Lagoon
The best ways to explore the lagoon are to take a boat ride among the islands and channels, birdwatching in the sanctuary, andprotected wetlands, photography (especially at sunrise and sunset), and fish tasting at local restaurants.
Alternative to crowded resorts
Just a few kilometres away are famous resorts such as Lignano Sabbiadoro or Grado. While there you will find beaches and bustle, Marano Lagoon offers the opposite. So you can head out to the sea during the day and return to the tranquillity of the lagoon in the evening, where you'll be undisturbed.
