Off the western coast of Sardinia, just off the picturesque town of Calasetta, stands the lonely lighthouse of Mangiabarche. Surrounded by cliffs, wind and sea, it is not only an important navigational point but also a poetic symbol of the wild west coast of the island. If you're looking for a special place, you've just found it.

Where is the Mangiabarche Lighthouse?

The Mangiabarche Lighthouse stands on a small rocky promontory called Scoglio Mangiabarche, just about 400 metres off the coast near the town of Calasetta on the island of Sant'Antioco (south-western Sardinia). It is clearly visible from the surrounding beaches and is often a destination for photographers, artists and lovers of dramatic scenery.

Why is it called "Mangiabarche"?

The name literally means "Eater of boats". It refers to the rocky reefs and shoals that hide beneath the surface and have caused many a twist in the fate of sailors in the past. When the sea churns and massive waves rise over the islet, its silhouette resembles a sea monster that seems to want to devour every vessel in the vicinity.

A short history of the lighthouse

Built in 1935,the lighthouse was originally lit by propane, but has been powered by solar energy since 1970 .its purpose was to warn ships of the treacherous shoals between the islands of Sant'Antioco and San Pietro, an area known for its strong currents and rough seas.it was restored around 2000 and remains in operation.

Lighthouse and modern art: Galleria Mangiabarche

Adjacent to the lighthouse, in the ruins of a former military anti-aircraft battery from the 2nd. mangiabarche - Galleria a Cielo Aperto, a unique open-air art gallery was created in 2012 in the vicinity of the World War II air base. The project was created in collaboration with the cultural institution Fondazione MACC. The site has been transformed into a space for contemporary exhibitions, performances and installations. Here, art is in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape, wind, sea and history.

The lighthouse has thus become not only a technical monument but also a cultural point in the landscape.

When is the best time to visit?

  • Sunsets here have an extraordinary atmosphere - the white tower contrasts sharply with the dark sea and orange sky.

  • In winter and during a strong majestic sunrise, the surroundings turn into a fascinating display of the power of nature - the waves often reach the top of the lighthouse!

Tips for visitors

Swimming at the lighthouse is not recommended - the underwater rocks and currents are treacherous. The lighthouse is a great place for photographers and drone pilots. The best view is from the shore at Calasetta, which can be reached on foot or by bike.
