The Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Grotto, is one of the biggest attractions of the island of Capri, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea in southern Italy. This unique sea cave enchants visitors with its play of light and water, creating incredible blue reflections as the sun's rays penetrate the water's surface.

The Grotta Azzurra has been known since Roman times, when it is said to have been used as a private bath by the emperors Tiberius and Augustus. Remains of ancient Roman statues have been found inside the cave, which probably decorated this unique natural monument. According to one legend, the cave was also considered to be the entrance to the underworld because of its mystical appearance and unusual atmosphere.

In the Middle Ages, the cave was partly forgotten because the locals believed it was cursed and inhabited by demons and sea monsters. It was only in the 19th century, specifically in 1826, that the Grotta Azzurra was rediscovered by the German poet August Kopisch, who found inspiration for his literary works there.

The phenomenon of light

The cave is 60 metres long and 25 metres wide, with a water depth of 15 metres. What makes the Grotta Azzurra so special is the light effect that is created inside the cave. Sunlight penetrates the cave under the water's surface and, thanks to the reflection off the white sandy bottom, the entire space is lit up in an incredibly rich blue colour. This optical phenomenon is most pronounced around midday, when the sun shines directly on the surface of the water in front of the cave.

Access to the cave is only possible by small boat, and only in calm seas. The opening is so low that visitors have to lie down on the bottom of the boat to pass through. The whole experience of visiting the cave is enhanced by the quiet and peaceful atmosphere that prevails inside, interrupted only by the splashing of the water.

Practical information

The Grotta Azzurra is located on the north-west side of the island of Capri, near the village of Anacapri. The best way to reach it is by boat from the main port of Marina Grande or by land from Anacapri. Visiting the cave is only possible in small boats that can be rented at the entrance of the cave. Entry to the cave depends on the weather and sea conditions, so it is advisable to check the sea conditions beforehand.

Prices for entry are usually fixed and include a boat ride for 2-3 people with a guide, as well as entry to the cave itself. The cave is open all year round (every day from 9:00-17:00), but the most pleasant time to visit is obviously in the summer months, when there are more chance of calm seas and bright sunlight, which is key to the unique blue effect.
