Lago di Carezza lies at an altitude of almost 1 600 metres, surrounded by the mountain peaks of Latemar and Rosengarten. Thanks to this position, the surrounding forests and rock peaks are mirrored on the surface. The colour of the lake changes constantly depending on the time of day, the weather and the position of the sun. The depth and size of the lake are seasonal and weather-dependent - the greatest depth is said to be about 22 m. The lake is fenced off and you are not allowed on its shores!
The legend of the nymph and the magician
There is also a beautiful Ladin legend connected to the lake. It tells of a water fairy with whom a powerful magician from the Latemar massif fell in love. In order to win her over, he decided to create a beautiful rainbow bridge over the lake. But the magician did not understand that the fairy could not be chained by magic. Shocked and frightened, she hid in the depths of the lake and never reappeared. The magician, angry and desperate, shattered the rainbow into a thousand pieces and threw them into the water. Since then, it is said that Lago di Carezza has shone with all its colours, as if it were carrying fragments of a lost rainbow.
Hiking trails and viewpoints
There is an easy trail around the lake, suitable for families with children. The walk takes about half an hour and offers a number of magical views. Thanks to its easy accessibility from Bolzano or Val d'Ego, Lago di Carezza is a popular destination for day trips.
In summer it invites for a quiet walk and photography, in winter the whole area turns into a snowy paradise.
