The story of the labyrinth: a publisher's dream come true
Franco Maria Ricci, the famous Italian publisher and art collector, was the author of the idea for this unique project. His love for labyrinths was born in the 1970s when Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges (known for his fondness for labyrinths and endless libraries) told him that he should create one. Ricci hasn't forgotten the idea and in 2015, after decades of planning, his dream finally became a reality.
The world's largest bamboo labyrinth
The Labirinto della Masone covers an area of 7 hectares and is made up of over 200,000 bamboo plants, 3-5 metres high. It is the largest maze in the world made entirely of bamboo. Ricci didn't choose bamboo by chance - it grows fast, is ecological and creates impenetrable green walls that make the maze really challenging. The goal? Find the square in the middle! You'll navigate winding paths that lead you to the main courtyard, where a neoclassical chapel inspired by ancient buildings stands .
Art, books and culture in the middle of the maze
But the Labirinto della Masone is not just an ordinary maze. The complex also includes an art gallery that exhibits works from the collection of Franco Maria Ricci, from Renaissance paintings to modern art.
Inside you will also find an extensive library containing rare books and prints. Ricci specialised in beautifully illustrated books and his publishing house was renowned throughout the world.
