What is the "Incendio del Campanile"?
L'Incendio del Campanile is a traditional festival held every year during the celebration of the Madonna dell'Angelo, patron saint of the town and protector of fishermen. The event takes place every second weekend in July and culminates in an evening light and pyrotechnic effect at the famous bell tower of the Duomo in the historic centre of Caorle.
When the procession with the statue of the Madonna arrives at Piazza Vescovado, red pyrotechnic effects are set off inside the bell tower, creating the illusion that the entire tower is on fire. Combined with the church bells, the music and the evening atmosphere, it is an extremely emotional experience.
Tradition associated with the Madonna dell'Angelo
The whole celebration is closely linked to the veneration of the Madonna dell'Angelo, who holds a special position in Caorle. For centuries, the local fishermen have considered her to be their protector when going to sea. The procession through the streets of the town is one of the most important religious events of the year and is attended not only by locals but also by tourists.
It is important not to confuse this July celebration with the much better known maritime procession of the Madonna dell'Angelo, which takes place only once every five years and takes place at sea. the "Incendio del Campanile" is a separate tradition.
Why does the bell tower "burn"?
The origin of the tradition is partly shrouded in mystery, but there are several historical explanations. According to the most commonly cited version, the celebration commemorates a fire in 1923, when the original statue of the Madonna burned during an attempted theft. The people of Caorle subsequently commissioned a new statue, which became a symbol of faith and protection for the town.
However, some sources also state that the ritual itself may be much older. The tradition is associated with Caorle's ancient maritime culture and is one of the oldest local festivals.
The iconic bell tower, symbol of Caorle
The bell tower itself is one of the most photographed buildings in Caorle. It is located next to the Duomo di Santo Stefano and dates back to 1038. It is characterised by its unusual cylindrical form topped with a conical roof, which is quite unique in Italy.
The architecture of the bell tower bears influences from the Byzantine and Ravenna styles. The tower is approximately 42 metres high and for centuries it served not only as a bell tower but probably also as a landmark for ships coming in from the sea.

Unlike traditional fireworks displays, this event has a very specific atmosphere. It is not just a visual show, but a combination of history, spirituality and local identity. The historic streets of Caorle are full of people, restaurants stay open late into the night and the whole town has an almost magical feel.
