When people hear the term “world championship,” most think of soccer, cycling, or skiing. In the northern Italian city of Treviso, however, a competition is held every year that celebrates one of the greatest icons of Italian gastronomy—tiramisu. The Tiramisù World Cup.

This isn’t a competition for professional pastry chefs, though. Quite the opposite. Amateurs who share a passion for this famous dessert compete for the title of best tiramisu maker, eager to prove that their recipe is the best.

Why Treviso?

Treviso is located in the Veneto region, not far from Venice, and is often referred to as the birthplace of tiramisu. It was here that the modern version of the dessert was created, a dessert that has spread to restaurants around the world over the course of several decades.

Although there are several theories about the origins of tiramisu, most food historians trace its creation to Treviso and the local restaurant Le Beccherie. As a result, the city has become the natural venue for the world championship.

During the competition, the historic center is transformed into a place filled with the aromas of coffee, mascarpone, and cocoa. Visitors can watch the contestants at work, sample various versions of the dessert, and soak up the city’s unique atmosphere.

Almost Anyone Can Compete

One of the most interesting aspects of the Tiramisu World Cup is that the competition is not intended for professionals.

Adult amateur cooks who do not work professionally in the culinary industry are eligible to enter. The organizers want to preserve the original concept of the competition—to find the best homemade tiramisu and give a platform to people who prepare this dessert out of love, not as part of their job.

Thanks to this, participants from various countries, professions, and age groups join the competition every year. Teachers, doctors, accountants, students, and retirees can all compete side by side.

Two Categories, Two Paths to Victory

The competition is divided into two main categories.

1. Original Recipe

This category is for lovers of tradition. Contestants may use only six classic ingredients:

  • mascarpone,

  • eggs,

  • sugar,

  • coffee,

  • cocoa,

  • Savoiardi ladyfingers.

No other ingredients are allowed. The competition will primarily evaluate technique, flavor, and the ability to create a perfectly balanced tiramisu using these basic ingredients.

2. Creative Recipe

The second category offers more room for creativity.

Mascarpone, eggs, coffee, and cocoa remain mandatory ingredients, but contestants may add up to three additional ingredients of their choice.

This leads to unusual combinations with fruit, nuts, chocolate, or regional specialties. The creative category demonstrates that tiramisu can take many forms without losing its essence.

How does the competition work?

Each contestant has their own workstation and a limited amount of time to prepare the dessert.

Within a few dozen minutes, they must create a tiramisu, which is then tasted by a panel of expert judges. The judges evaluate not only the final flavor but also the technical execution, appearance, and overall harmony of the individual components.

It is precisely the balance of ingredients that often determines victory or defeat. Even a minor error in the ratio of coffee, mascarpone, or sugar can affect the final result.

What makes a good tiramisu exceptional?

Although the recipe seems simple, preparing the perfect tiramisu requires experience and an eye for detail.

The most important factors are the right consistency of the mascarpone cream, balanced sweetness, high-quality coffee, properly soaked ladyfingers, and a harmonious blend of all the flavors.

It is precisely the simplicity of the recipe that reveals every mistake. That is why tiramisu is considered one of the most challenging Italian desserts when it comes to achieving a truly exceptional result.

Treviso During the Tiramisu World Cup

The competition itself is just one part of the entire event. During the championship, the city comes alive with a variety of accompanying programs.

During the event, you can visit the historic center of Treviso, sample local culinary specialties, participate in tastings, learn about the history of tiramisu, and discover the lesser-known beauties of the Veneto region.

The atmosphere is usually friendly and relaxed. Unlike large international festivals, the event retains its authentic character and strong connection to local tradition.

Why is the Tiramisu World Cup worth a visit?

TheTiramisu World Cup isn’t just a competition for the best dessert. It’s a celebration of Italian cuisine, traditions, and a passion for quality food. It offers a great opportunity to get to know Treviso at a time when the city is celebrating its most famous culinary tradition. And for those with a sweet tooth, it’s a unique chance to taste dozens of different versions of one of the world’s most popular desserts.
