Why is it called "Zinzulusa"?
The word "zinzuli" means "rags" in the Salento dialect . If you look up into the ceiling of the cave, you will see stalactite formations that resemble torn curtains - as if someone had left their clothes behind.
Entering from the sea: a moment to remember
The cave is accessible on foot along the coastal path from Castro Marina or by boat directly from the sea. When the boat pulls up to the opening in the cliff, the surface glows emerald and the sound of the waves turns into a temple echo.
What you'll see inside
The Zinzulusa Grotto is naturally divided into several sections:
- The Transition Gallery (stalactites resembling cloth curtains - zinzuli)
- Cristallina Pool - crystal clear, almost still water
- Inner part (protected ecosystem with rare organisms - scientists are still studying microfauna here, which is not found anywhere else in the world - it is a natural laboratory of time)

Right next to the cave is a man-made saltwater pool that was built on the rocks in the 1960s when Castro was becoming a popular coastal destination. The seawater is poured in directly from the Adriatic, so the water is clean, clear and the same temperature as the sea.in the past, the area around the cave was very wild (steep cliffs, no beaches), so the pool served as a safe swimming area. And today? It's an iconic swimming spot in the Castro.
The pool is carved into the rock, with sun terraces all around. Entrance is usually paid (varies seasonally, about €5-15), and in summer there's usually a lido bar (drinks, loungers, music).
