Vittoriale degli Italiani—A City Within a City
If you’re going to visit just one attraction in Gardone Riviera, it should be the Vittoriale degli Italiani. This sprawling complex was commissioned by the writer and poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, who lived here from 1921 until his death. The complex was built gradually between 1921 and 1938, and it is certainly not just an ordinary historic villa. Spanning several hectares, it features a mix of buildings, gardens, plazas, water features, museum exhibits, and a large outdoor amphitheater.
And that is precisely what makes the Vittoriale so fascinating. D’Annunzio created a world here according to his own vision—somewhat grandiose, somewhat theatrical, and at times even bizarre.
The complex includes, for example, his home, the Prioria, where the interiors, library, and numerous personal items have been preserved. According to an Italian tourism portal, the private library contains around 33,000 volumes. Above the complex stands a monumental mausoleum where D’Annunzio is buried.
Vittoriale is thus interesting even for people who don’t usually seek out historic houses and museums. It is, in fact, more of a stroll through the peculiar world of a very distinctive man than a traditional museum visit.
André Heller Botanical Garden—Nature as a Work of Art
