Just over an hour's drive from popular resorts like Bibione or Lignano, you'll find yourself in another world. A world of mosaics, medieval streets and a relaxed atmosphere.
Within sight of the mountains
Spilimbergo is situated on the banks of the Tagliamento River and its history dates back to the 12th century. Upon arrival, you are already greeted by the romantic silhouette of Spilimbergo Castle, around which the old town with its preserved walls spreads.

Walk through the main square, Piazza Duomo, where you will find the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore. At first glance, it impresses with its massive Gothic façade. And inside it holds real treasures - magnificent frescoes and mosaics that remind you that Spilimbergo has always been a centre of artistic life.
One of the things that immediately catches your eye in Spilimbergo are the magnificent frescoes on the facades of the houses.
The city is often called the "city of frescoed houses" - and rightly so. From the very first walk you will discover that the paintings are not only hidden in churches or palaces, but also decorate ordinary town houses.
One of the most beautiful examples is the Casa Dipinta (" painted house") on the main street - its entire façade is covered with rich frescoes that tell the stories and legends of the region.

A world of mosaics like nowhere else
Spilimbergo is absolutely unique for its mosaic school - the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli. This school has been operating since 1922 and has produced generations of artists who have spread their art all over the world.
A visit to the school is an experience in itself. Here you will see not only historical mosaics, but also modern interpretations of this ancient technique. Colourful glass and stone shards are assembled into fascinating paintings that demonstratethat mosaic is not just an "art of the past" but a living and constantly evolving form of expression.
The exhibitions are open to the public, and if you wish, you can even book a small workshop and try your hand at creating your own mosaic!

An experience for all the senses
But Spilimbergo is not just about sights and art. It's also a place to enjoy a great meal and relax.
In the local restaurants you can taste the typical specialities of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. We recommend trying the frico - a delicious crispy patty made with Montasio cheese, potatoes and onions. If you like meat, don't miss the prosciutto di San Daniele, one of the best hams in Italy, produced just a short distance away.

And what to go with it? A glass of local wine, such as Friulano or a light Pinot Grigio, will make your experience perfect.
Spilimbergo is beautiful in all seasons, but if you go here in the summer, you can experiencesome of the festivals - such as the Festa del Mosaico, when the streets are filled with displays of mosaic art, music and life.
Or just sit in a café in the square, have an espresso, watch the hustle and bustle and soak up the atmosphere.
