Spello has a long history that dates back to ancient Rome, when it was known as Hispellum. The town is famous for its medieval walls, which are well preserved in several places. One of the biggest attractions is the Porta Venere, a monumental Roman gate that was built in the 2nd century BC and served as the entrance to the city.

A stroll through the city will take you to churches and monasteries such as Santa Maria Maggiore, home to the famous frescoes by Pietro Vannucci (Perugino).
Flower Festival
But Spello is also a town alive with culture and tradition. The most famous event, which attracts thousands of visitors every year, is the Infiorata di Spello, a flower festival that takes place every spring (late May/early June). During this festival, the streets of the city are decorated with beautiful floral carpets that create impressive works of art. The festival is not only a celebration of nature but also an important cultural event for the local community.

Infiorata is held in Spello on the Feast of Corpus Domini (60 days after Easter). The townspeople and artists create beautiful carpets of petals that cover the streets. These floral images often depict religious motifs, biblical scenes, as well as modern artistic compositions.
The whole festival is competitive - an expert jury judges the individual carpets and selects the best ones. And even in the category of children up to 14 years old! Every year, hundreds of volunteers are involved in the preparations, not only locals but also tourists who want to experience this unique festival.

In 2011, the Infiorata di Spello won the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of floral images created during one event.
