History and significance
The festival originated in 1577 to celebrate the end of a devastating plague epidemic that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577. The church of Il Redentore on the island of Giudecca was built to commemorate this event, to which a temporary pontoon bridge is built every year for the procession of the faithful.

19:00 - Opening of the pontoon bridge connecting the Zattere waterfront with Il Redentore Church.
23:30 - Spectacular fireworks display over the Bacino di San Marco
- Sunday 20 July
16:00-18:00 - Traditional Pupparini gondola and boat regatta on the Giudecca Canal.
19:00 - Solemn Mass in the Church of Il Redentore.
Atmosphere and tradition
The night of the Festa del Redentore is known as "Notte famosissima" - the most glorious night - and is deeply rooted in Venetian culture. during Saturday night, locals and visitors gather on boats decorated with flowers and lanterns to celebrate and watch fireworks together.
