When the other shore is closer than it seems
Standing on the banks of the Tagliamento River, you get the feeling that the other side is within reach. In reality, however, you'd be looking at quite a long detour by car. That's where the X River comes in. A small boat that regularly pendulates between the two banks allows you to cover a distance that would otherwise mean tens of extra kilometres in a matter of minutes.
A short cruise, a powerful experience
The cruise itself is short but surprisingly powerful. The Tagliamento River is one of the last naturally preserved rivers in Italy, so instead of the hustle and bustle of the roads, you're surrounded by tranquillity, open space and the feeling of being completely out of the tourist traffic for a while. That's the charm of the X River - it's not just moving from Lignano to the point of Bibione, but a little experience.
The ferry runs every 30 minutes according to the following timetable:
- 28. march - April 30: Saturdays and holidays from 9:00 to 19:15
- 1. may - 6 September: daily from 9:00 to 19:15
- 7. september - 30 September: daily from 9:00 to 18:45
- 3. october - 25 October: Saturdays and public holidays from 9:00 to 17:45
- 31. october - 1 November: from 9:00 to 16:45
The service is operated by TPL FVG and can accommodate up to 25 people and 25 bicycles. The price for each cruise is € 1,00 per person. Children under 10 travel free of charge. The service is also accessible for people with disabilities (including wheelchair users), pushchairs and dogs on leads.
In the morning you can cycle from Bibione along the coast, get on a boat and in a few minutes find yourself in Lignano, where you can have lunch or coffee in the harbour. In the afternoon you can return back without having to deal with traffic, parking or lengthy transfers. The whole thing works simply, stress-free and exactly in that Italian style where nothing is unnecessarily complicated.
When X River works
X River is a seasonal service that operates mainly from spring to autumn. In the summer it runs regularly during the day, but outside the high season it tends to run more on weekends. The service adapts to the weather, so it may be temporarily interrupted during high winds or storms. However, it retains a quieter and more authentic character.
