The authentic atmosphere of Ligurian life
Unlike the larger Monterosso, Vernazza has a quieter feel and retains a strong identity as a traditional fishing village. In the narrow caruggi (alleys) you will find old stone houses with laundry hanging from the windows, a smalland small shops selling regional specialities.
The harbour and the main square
The heart of Vernazza is its small, semi-circular harbour, protected by a rocky promontory. Just off it is the main square , Piazza Marconi, lined with cafes, restaurants and colourfulhouses - a great place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine or a typical aperitif.

The local harbour is not only a beautiful place to sit, but also an ideal location for swimming. The entrance to the sea is easy and the water is usually calm.
Sights and historical attractions
Do you like to admire historical sights and attractions? In Vernazza you can visit the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia - a Romanesque church from the 14th century. the interior is modest but impressive for its antiquity.
You will also be impressed by Castello Doria, the ruins of a castle that was used to protect the village from pirates. From the top of the tower you have one of the best views of the whole Cinque Terre.
And let's not forget the monastery of Frati Minori Riformati. It lies on the road to the mountains above Vernazza and provides another wonderful panoramic view.

Hiking and trails
Vernazza is a key point for hiking:

The trail to Monterosso (westbound): about 1.5-2 hours walk, the route passes through vineyards high above the sea. One of the most photogenic sections of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail).

Trail to Corniglia (eastbound): shorter but more physically demanding part of the route, often in the shade. It offers beautiful views of the sea and dramatic cliffs.

Culture and events
Every July Vernazza hosts the Festa di Santa Margherita, the feast of the town's patron saint, with processions, music and fireworks.
Vernazza is also famous for its painters - you'll often see artists painting the scenery right on the pier or in the alleys.
Gastronomy
A small town, but great cuisine! The local speciality is trophies al pesto - handmade pasta with fresh pesto.fish and seafood play a starring role here - try the fried calamari or octopus on wine.
