Vernazza is often considered the most picturesque and romantic of the five towns of the Cinque Terre. The sight of its harbour, the colourful houses clinging to the rocks, the narrow streets and the dominant Castello Doria will be a memory you'll remember for a lifetime.

The authentic atmosphere of Ligurian life

Unlike the larger Monterosso, Vernazza has a quieter feel and retains a strong identity as a traditional fishing village. In the narrow caruggi (alleys) you will find old stone houses with laundry hanging from the windows, a smalland small shops selling regional specialities.

The harbour and the main square

The heart of Vernazza is its small, semi-circular harbour, protected by a rocky promontory. Just off it is the main square , Piazza Marconi, lined with cafes, restaurants and colourfulhouses - a great place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine or a typical aperitif.

You will also be impressed by Castello Doria, the ruins of a castle that was used to protect the village from pirates. From the top of the tower you have one of the best views of the whole Cinque Terre.

And let's not forget the monastery of Frati Minori Riformati. It lies on the road to the mountains above Vernazza and provides another wonderful panoramic view.

  • Trail to Corniglia (eastbound): shorter but more physically demanding part of the route, often in the shade. It offers beautiful views of the sea and dramatic cliffs.
