Where can you find the Etruscan tombs?
The tombs are located near the historic center of Bibbona in Tuscany, Italy. The archaeological heritage is primarily represented by the Grotte Gialle, a complex of Etruscan chambers carved directly into the light-colored rock typical of the region. Why Bibbona tuff?
The local rock, known as Bibbona tuff, is not a classic volcanic tuff. In fact, it is a calcarenite—a sedimentary marine rock approximately one million years old. It is soft enough for the Etruscans to carve extensive burial chambers into it, yet strong enough to have survived to this day.
It is precisely thanks to these properties that tombs with multiple rooms, corridors, and architectural features—resembling actual houses—were created.
