According to the EMSC (European and Mediterranean Seismological Centre), the epicentre of the earthquake was in the sea, off the coast of the Calabria region. The tremor was felt by the inhabitants of some southern regions(Calabria, Sicily and Apulia).
A 6.1 magnitude tremor was recorded just outside Naples. the damage is not yet known, but according to experts, the focus was deep (up to 246 kilometres below the surface). The Italian Civil Protection convened its crisis unit on Tuesday night because of the tremor.
"The tremor was very strong and we felt it clearly in Cosenza and throughout Calabria, fortunately the situation is under control," said the mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, which has 67,000 inhabitants and is located a few dozen kilometres from the epicentre.
