In the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region, just a few kilometres from Bologna, lies the picturesque village of Dozza. Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, this place has earned a reputation as one of Italy's most beautiful historic towns. But what makes Dozza truly unique are its frescoed facades, which have transformed the entire village into an open-air gallery.

The painted village: the Biennale del Muro Dipinto

Since 1960, the Biennale del Muro Dipinto (Painted Wall Biennale) has been held regularly in Dozza. During this event, the streets fill with artists who create unique frescoes directly on the walls of the houses. Each painting carries its own story, style and the handwriting of the artist, giving the village an ever-changing atmosphere. But even outside the Biennale, you can admire dozens of works of art.

The dominant feature of Dozza: Rocca Sforzesca

The highlight of the visit is the imposing Rocca Sforzesca, a 13th-century fortress that towers over the village. The castle served as a strategic residence for powerful families, including the Sforzas and the Borgias. Today, there is a museum here that educates visitors about the history of the region.

Another attraction is the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia-Romagna, located right in the castle's underground rooms. Here you can taste the best wines of the region, such as Sangiovese, Lambrusco or Albana.

The charm of the narrow streets

Walking through Dozza is like entering another world. the narrow cobbled streets are lined with houses with pastel-coloured facades, often complete with floral decorations. Every corner holds a new surprise - a successful fresco, an ancient fountain or a cosy café. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, ideal for those who love slow travel.

Gastronomy and wine

Dozza is not only a visual but also a gourmet experience. In the local restaurants you can taste the traditional specialities of the Emilia-Romagna region - for example, homemade tagliatelle al ragù pasta, stuffed tortellini or delicious mortadella. Local wines, especially the red Sangiovese and white Albana, perfectly complement the rich flavours of the local cuisine.

How to visit Dozza?

Dozza is easily accessible by car, taking around 40 minutes to reach from Bologna. The village is ideal for a day trip, but if you want to enjoy its charm to the full, it is recommended to stay overnight.

Whether you come here for inspiration, wine, or simply for a quiet stroll in a magical setting, Dozza will not disappoint.
