In Sardinia, hidden among olive groves, rocky cliffs, and untamed nature, lies one of the island’s most enchanting heritage sites— the Domus de Janas. These prehistoric rock tombs, whose name in the Sardinian dialect means “Houses of the Fairies, ” have fascinated visitors for centuries.

What are the Domus de Janas?

The Domus de Janas date back to the Neolithic Ozieri culture (ca. 3400–2700 BCE). They are artificially carved rock tombs that often resemble small houses with entrances, corridors, and rooms. Archaeologists have discovered more than 3, 500 of them across Sardinia —from the coast to the mountainous interior.

Their purpose was funerary, but their design suggests they also held ritual and symbolic significance. The walls of some tombs are decorated with reliefs, spirals, or motifs of bulls—sacred animals of Neolithic cultures.

The Legend of the Fairies

The Sardinian name Domus de Janas is linked to folk legends. According to tradition, these were the dwellings of tiny fairies—“janas”—who lived underground, wove golden fabrics, and protected nature. Sometimes they are said to have helped people; at other times, they punished them for greed. To this day, locals tell stories about mysterious creatures that inhabit the rocks and caves.

The Most Famous Sites

If you visit Sardinia, the most significant sites featuring Domus de Janas include:

  • Anghelu Ruju (Alghero) —the largest necropolis with more than 30 tombs.

  • Sant’Andrea Priu (Bonorva) —a monumental complex whose largest tomb resembles a veritable underground palace.

  • Montessu (Santadi) —a vast necropolis set amid the wild landscape in the south of the island.

Each site has its own unique atmosphere—in some, you’ll sense a sense of mystery; in others, you’ll be amazed by the technical skill of the people who, more than 5,000 years ago, were able to transform rock into perfect spaces.

For travelers seeking not only the sea and beaches but also the island’s secrets and deeper history, a visit to Domus de Janas is an unforgettable experience.

Travel tip: Domus de Janas are scattered all over the island. If you’re planning a road trip through Sardinia, it’s worth scheduling stops not only along the coast but also inland.
