La Piaggia, symbol of Corinaldo
The staircase of La Piaggia is one of the most famous places in the whole region. It has 109 steps and forms the natural axis of the town. In the middle stands the Pozzo della Polenta well, associated with a local legend, according to which a man once carried a heavy copper cauldron full of hot polenta on his shoulder. he was walking up the steps of La Piaggia, but as he passed the well, his foot slipped. The cauldron toppled over and fell into its depths. The man tried to save it, but it was impossible - the polenta remained at the bottom of the well and from then on the place became known as Pozzo della Polenta. The legend has been handed down for generations and has become a firm part of the town's identity.
La Piaggia is a photogenic place that often appears in pictures of the Marche. It is one of the main stops of every visit.
The ramparts that surround the whole town
Corinaldo is famous for its continuous system of medieval walls. They date from the 14th-15th centuries and are among the best preserved fortifications in all of central Italy.
