Just a few steps from the sea, hidden in a rock near the town of Pizzo in Calabria, is one of the most interesting temples in Italy - the Chiesa di Piedigrotta. This unusual rock church is carved into a tuff cliff right by the sea and is full of stone statues.

According to local legend, the church was built as a token of gratitude. When a ship sank in a heavy storm off the coast of Pisa in the 17th century, the sailors managed to save themselves by praying to the Virgin Mary. The wreck and the image of the Madonna washed up on the very spot where the Chiesa di Piedigrotta stands today, and the grateful survivors built the first shrine there.

A sculptural gem inside the cave

Although the exterior of the church is very unassuming - it looks more like a sea cave than a classical religious building - the interior surprises with its elaborate decoration. During the 19th and 20th centuries, local sculptors, especially the Barone family, created dozens of religious statues directly from the soft rock. Here you will find saints, angels, scenes from the Bible and, of course, the Virgin Mary protecting the sailors.

An atmosphere like no other

The combination of the sound of the sea, the strange darkness and the raw stone statues creates a unique, almost magical atmosphere in Chiesa di Piedigrotta. This rock temple is not only a place of devotion but also a cultural attraction that attracts photographers, travellers and curiosity seekers from all over the world.
