A city benefiting from the riches underground
Massa Marittima has flourished since the Middle Ages thanks to silver and metal mining in the surrounding mountains. As a result, the town could afford to build a representative temple to match its importance. The Cathedral of St Cerbone was built in the 12th century and became the centre of the spiritual and cultural life of the whole Maremma area.
Architecture of the cathedral
The cathedral is an example of typical Tuscan Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The façade is decorated with stripes of white and dark marble and its structure resembles the more famous domes of Siena or Pisa, but on a smaller and more intimate scale.
Inside you will find:
-
The marble sarcophagus of St. Cerbone, the patron saint of the city, whose remains were transferred to the temple in the 12th century.
-
The pulpit of the sculptor Giovanni Pisano - one of the most precious works of Italian Gothic (13th century), decorated with reliefs of biblical scenes.
-
Frescoes and paintings from different eras that illustrate the important role of the cathedral throughout the centuries.
Legends and stories
The life of St. Cerbone himself, Bishop of Populonia, is linked to the cathedral. According to legend, he became the protector of the inhabitants from barbarian raids and also from a plague epidemic. Visiting his tomb was already in the Middle Ages a destination for pilgrims who believed in his miraculous powers.
Practical tips
The cathedral stands right on the main square, Piazza Garibaldi, surrounded by medieval palaces. Opening times vary according to the season, we recommend checking the current times at the tourist centre. Around the city you will also find the remains of old mines, nature reserves and beautiful vineyards. Combine your visit with a trip to the nearby Maremma coast or the medieval town of Populonia.
The Cathedral of St Cerbone in Massa Marittima is a hidden gem of Tuscany. It's not just a temple - it's a reminder of a glorious past when even smaller towns competed for beauty and importance with big centres like Siena and Pisa.
