Castelno ne' Monti is one of those places in Emilia-Romagna that surprises you twice - first by how little is said about it, and then by how much it offers. This mountain village lies in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park.

Pietra di Bismantova - the symbol of the region

Above the town of Castelnovo ne' Monti towers an unusual rock massif - the Pietra di Bismantova, which resembles a giant stone table. It is one of the most famous natural formations in the Apennines and the main reason why tourists, climbers and photographers head here. There is a pleasant route to the top, manageable even for the less experienced, and the reward is wide panoramic views of the Apennine ridges and the green valley below.

Dante Alighieri is said to have been inspired by the massif when writing The Divine Comedy, specifically when describing Purgatory.

At the foot of the massif lies Eremo di Bismantova, a small spiritual retreat dating back to the 17th century. It's a simple, peaceful complex - chapels, corridors and a terrace with spectacular views of the pastures and woods around.one of the most common routes to the summit also starts from here, so the monastery acts as a natural stop on the way up.

The historic core, which retains its atmosphere

Castelnovo ne' Monti has a small historic centre with stone houses, small shops, traditional cafes and a local market that is one of the liveliest in the Reggio Emilia region. Here you will find the pleasant Piazza Peretti, small churches and starting routes to the surrounding villages and viewpoints.

The village is a great starting point for trips to the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park. In summer there are hikes, chestnut and mushroom picking, and in winter there are small ski areas in the area. The surrounding countryside is varied - deep forests, mountain villages, waterfalls, pastures and views that will stay in your memory for a long time.

Local cuisine: simple, honest and hearty

It is said that here they eat "like in the mountains". On the menu you'll often find erbiolini (traditional vegetable pouches), gnocco fritto with cheeses and cured meats from the region, polenta, venison and homemade pasta, or desserts made with chestnut flour.

Castelnovo ne' Monti is a place that won't overwhelm you with noisy tourism, but with landscape, silence and the authentic rhythm of mountain life.
