The medieval guardian of Varenna
Castello di Vezio was built in the early Middle Ages as a defensive fortress for the Lombard Queen Theodolinda. Its strategic location on a hill had one purpose - to control access routes and protect the inhabitants from raids. Although the castle has changed over the centuries, it has remained a symbol of power and security on Lake Como.
The main tower has been preserved and from its top you can see a breathtaking panorama - the turquoise surface of Lake Como, the green slopes of the surrounding mountains and the charming Varenna directly below. The views are among the most beautiful in Lombardy.
Ghost statues and a special atmosphere
Castello di Vezio is not just another romantic castle. The place has a unique atmosphere that is accentuated by mysterious statues resembling ghosts. Every year, artists create plaster figures dressed in white robes, which stand in the castle grounds and on the viewing terraces. These "souls of Varenna" give the castle an almost supernatural touch and are one of the most photographed attractions of Lake Como.
Birds of prey and a living tradition
Another attraction of Castello di Vezio is the falconry tradition. There are regular demonstrations of birds of prey - falcons, eagles or owls - flying directly over the heads of visitors. This spectacle is reminiscent of medieval times, when falconry was a favourite pastime of the nobility.
A walk with a reward
The castle is most often reached on foot from Varenna. The walk through the local streets and vineyards takes about 20-30 minutes. But the effort is worth it - the reward is not only a visit to the castle, but also the most beautiful views of Lake Como.
