Castellaro Lagusello is a part of the municipality of Monzambano in the province of Mantova ( Lombardy region). Its name perfectly describes the place itself - "castellaro" means a small fortification and "lagusello" refers to the heart-shaped lake(laghetto).
It is this pond that gives the village its romantic atmosphere.
A small fortress with a big history
The village dates back to the Middle Ages, when there was a fortified castle (fortress, small castle) protecting the locals. The Scaligeri of Verona, the Visconti of Milan and the Gonzagas of Mantova have all competed for control of this strategic point.
Stone towers, gates and part of the fortifications that line the ancient streets still remain from the original walls.
Walking around Castellaro Lagusello is like a journey through time - no modern signs, no car noise, just stone houses, wrought-iron lamps and fragrant gardens.
Things to see in Castellaro Lagusello
Fortifications and gates
The ramparts surround the village in an almost original form. There was once a trapdoor and a defensive tower, but today you can take a leisurely stroll along the camminamento di ronda, a gallery that offers beautiful views of the surrounding area.
Church of San Nicola di Bari
The main church stands on the site of an older shrine and houses a rare 15th century statue of the Virgin Mary. It is not large, but it has a special calm that fits perfectly into the atmosphere of the village.
Villa Arrighi-Tacoli
This elegant villa, converted from an old castle, now forms the heart of the village. In the summer it hosts concerts, exhibitions and gastronomic events.
The heart-shaped pond
The biggest attraction of Castellaro Lagusello is the small natural heart-shaped lake (similar to Lago di Scanno). Few people know that its shores are also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to archaeological findings from the Bronze Age(prehistoric pile building).
Things to do in the area
Castellaro Lagusello is just a 10-minute drive from Lago di Garda and 30 minutes from Mantova or Verona.
You can combine the tranquillity of the countryside with excursions in the surrounding area - visit Borghetto sul Mincio, Solferino or take a bike tour of the Mincio Natural Park.
Local restaurants offer famous Mantova specialities: tortelli di zucca, homemade salami and, of course, the excellent wine of the Garda DOC.
