Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) is one of the most important airports in northern Italy and serves as a popular gateway not only to the Emilia-Romagna region but also to popular resorts along the Adriatic coast. Thanks to its convenient location and wide range of flight connections, it is frequently used by travelers heading to Rimini, Riccione, Cesenatico, or Milano Marittima.

Although it is not located directly by the sea, the journey to the coast is relatively quick and comfortable. Compared to smaller regional airports, it also offers a wider selection of flights and often more affordable ticket prices.

Where is Bologna Airport located?

The airport is located approximately 6 km northwest of the center of Bologna and is one of the most accessible airports in Italy. Thanks to its connection to the A14 highway and the railway network, it serves as an ideal starting point for a trip to the Adriatic Sea.

Rimini and Riccione are among the most popular destinations for tourists arriving in Bologna.

Car Rental at Bologna Airport

You’ll find a wide selection of international and local car rental companies at the airport. If you plan to explore more coastal destinations during your vacation or travel around the Emilia-Romagna region, a car is a very practical choice.

The roads are in good condition, and most coastal destinations are easily accessible via the A14 highway.

How to get from the airport to the coast without a car?

A major advantage of Bologna is its excellent rail connections. Thanks to this, you can reach most resorts comfortably even without your own car.

Marconi Express to the City Center

The Marconi Express automated train runs directly from the airport, connecting the terminal to Bologna Centrale station in just a few minutes.

From there, regular trains depart along the Adriatic coast.

Train to the Sea

From Bologna Centrale station, you can easily reach destinations such as Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Cesenatico, Cervia, and Bellaria-Igea Marina.

The trip to Rimini takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the type of train. The advantage is that in most of these resorts, the train station is located near the beach or the city center.

If you don’t want to rent a car, the train is usually the most convenient option.

Buses

There are also bus routes from the airport to the center of Bologna. However, most tourists use the Marconi Express and then the train, as this is a faster and simpler solution.

During the summer season, private transfers or bus services to some seaside resorts may also be available.

Taxis and private transfers

A taxi is best suited for traveling to the center of Bologna. If you’re heading directly to a hotel by the sea, a private transfer might be a good option. You can reach Cesenatico in about 1 hour, Rimini in 1 hour and 20 minutes, Riccione in 1.5 hours, and Cattolica in a similar amount of time.

Is a car necessary for a vacation on the Adriatic?

A car is not necessary in Rimini, Riccione, Cesenatico, Cervia, or Bellaria-Igea Marina. These resorts have good train connections, and most services are within walking distance.

We recommend a car if you want to explore more cities, plan trips to San Marino, or want to visit lesser-known beaches and villages.

Is it worth flying via Bologna?

Definitely yes. Although it is not located directly by the sea, it offers excellent connections by train and car and often a wider selection of flights than smaller coastal airports. If you are heading to the Adriatic Riviera, Bologna Airport is usually one of the best options.
