The Bernina Express is one of the most breathtaking train routes in the world. In just a few hours, it takes you from the Italian town of Tirano all the way to St. Moritz (St. Moritz), crossing high-altitude mountain passes, passing through dozens of tunnels, and offering views of glaciers, mountain lakes, and deep valleys. All of this is achieved without the use of a rack-and-pinion railway, making this route a technical marvel.

For travelers, the Bernina Express is not only a means of transportation but, above all, an unforgettable experience. The route is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is rightly considered one of the most beautiful railways in Europe.

The Italian starting point is Tirano in Lombardy, which is easily accessible by car or regional trains. From there, the train climbs through the Valtellina Valley, crosses the Bernina Pass at an elevation of 2,253 meters above sea level, and continues on to the elegant mountain resort of St. Moritz in Switzerland.

The entire journey is approximately 144 kilometers long and takes just under four hours.

The Most Beautiful Sections of the Route

One of the most famous spots is the Brusio Viaduct, where the train travels across a circular stone bridge, tracing an almost complete circle. This viaduct is one of the most photographed railway structures in Europe.

Other highlights include the journey past the Morteratsch Glacier, the turquoise Lago Bianco, and the ascent to the Bernina Pass, which offers panoramic views of the Alpine peaks.

A Technical Marvel Without a Rack-and-Pinion System

Although the train climbs a significant gradient, the track does not use a rack-and-pinion system. The maximum gradient reaches up to 7%, which is exceptional for a standard adhesion railway. Thanks to the well-designed route, tunnels, and viaducts, the trains manage the challenging ascent solely through the adhesion of the wheels to the rails. It is precisely this technical uniqueness that was one of the reasons the Albula–Bernina Railway was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

When is the best time to take the Bernina Express?

Every season offers a different experience. In the spring, nature awakens in the valleys; summer brings green mountain meadows and crystal-clear lakes. Fall entices with the vibrant colors of forests and vineyards, while in winter the landscape is blanketed in snow.

Many travelers recommend taking the trip in the fall or winter, when the views are particularly impressive.

Is a reservation required?

Yes. Seat reservations are mandatory for the Bernina Express’s panoramic cars, and it’s recommended to book well in advance, especially during the summer season. An alternative is the regular regional trains, which run along the same route and offer the same views, just without the panoramic windows and the mandatory reservation.
